Jim received his BA in History and Speech Education from Central State University (now UCO), his M.Div. from Iliff School of Theology and his D.Min. from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. He is an ordained Elder in the UMC, having served churches in Oklahoma since 1994. He and his wife, Lu Ann, have three adult children: Benjamin, Rebecca, and Joshua.
